F1 – Spanish Grand Prix Qualifying : Red Bull on a Different Planet

Which one is the biggest headline? Schumacher’s returns to form or Red Bull’s domination to pole?

Mark Webber twice at the session demoted Vettel from provisional pole, it left a bit of a sour in Vettel I would presume. However one thing to note is the improvement level over the rest of the field. Nearly a second to the nearest competitor, Lewis of McLaren.

He was not beatable today. It was close. I think I had good laps throughout qualifying, especially at the end but it was just not enough, so a tenth is not much, but today it was a bit too much for me.

The new pointy car played to Schumacher’s strengths more than Nico. Nico said he found the car difficult to drive. It seems like a role reversal of some sort for these two drivers.

3rd on the grid is the best ever qualifying position for McLaren this season. They have leapfrogged Ferrari with the development updates.

Lotus racing resume normality by being the best of the new teams. The new updates are significantly faster and the 3.5 seconds gap objective to the front has been achieved. A mission complete for Barcelona. For Virgin and HRT, it has become a mountain for them to take the honor of being the best of the new teams now. Tony, Mike and both drivers are very pleased with the result.

Ferrari has gone backward in Barcelona, the updates on the car was just not good enough, at least in Qualifying. Alonso’s day ended on a low when he got fined 20,000 dollars for an incident with Rosberg in the pits. Alonso landed himself on 4th place on the grid for tomorrow.

Jenson Button continued his poor run of form from practice sessions to qualifying in Barcelona. Out-qualified by his teammate and pipped from 4th place by Alonso, Jenson would need some help from the rain god if he is to retain his lead in the championship.

After the head injury last season, Felipe never came back to his old form where he made Raikkonen’s 50m a year looks ridiculous. He took 9th on the grid, off 4 places to his teammate. At Ferrari it’s not a satisfactory performance.

7th place with Renault? Earth shattering performance from Kubica out-qualifying Massa’s Ferrari and Rosberg’s Mercedes.

So, who will come on top on Sunday? Webber or Vettel?
